Comedy Career Q & A, Part 8: Stay Grounded and Magical

Alicia: And if you can quit your job and enjoy that for a while and have it be building toward you creating the next level of your performance and who you are on stage, amazing, do it. If it’s like I’m getting paid $12 an hour for this, I don’t really need that $12 an hour, compared with the amount of free time, but if you’re getting paid $120 an hour, sometimes it’s maybe more worth can I keep doing that job for a shorter amount of time and have some of my energy left over.

So, you start to do calculations in your head of what’s the right amount of work or do I need to get more skills and get a higher paying job so I have more money and can work less and then I can put more time toward comedy. Those are different calculations that you look at in terms of how old am I, what am I working towards, what do I want to have in five years, where do I want to be, what’s most important to me?

Able: That’s definitely where I’m at right now.

Alicia: Yeah.

Able: I’ve been in mental health for about four years now and I just yeah, I want to do something for me because I’m always holding space for other people all day.

Alicia: Yeah, well I’m excited for you.

Able: I’d like to maybe share my first video with you because you can’t see me at all right now.

Alicia: I know I can’t see you at all. I’m just flying blind right now. I see a little picture of you smiling, which is adorable.

Able: Oh, my Skype picture.

Alicia: I’m so glad we got to talk, and I would love to work with you. Your deadpan delivery is totally cracking me up. I’d be happy to talk to you at some point about what your next steps might be, exploring what feels right for you in terms of what are the strategic choices are at this point, for example,

"How am I going to go as far as I want to go or have the best chance at getting what I want, and at the same time like what’s the big picture? What’s the real purpose of doing this? What do I want my life to look like? Being both grounded and magical, at the same time. Being in a space of, 'I could be okay regardless of what happens.'"

Able: Yep, that’s where I would like to be. Grounded and magical; that sounds like a perfect mantra.

Alicia: I like it too. Yeah, keeping our feet on the ground and making space for us to fly. What’s possible? Anything.

Able: This is a great end to your promotional coaching video. You flying off into the ether. Just whoosh.

Alicia: And you can too. It’s all okay. Anything, anything, or maybe nothing, who knows.

Able: Anything’s possible. Cool, well I really appreciate you sitting down with me.

Alicia: I’m standing up actually but yeah, totally.

Able: Well, I’m sitting, but I can’t see you.

Alicia: Talking with you helps me to remind me of what I’m grateful for when I talk with people and to come back to those principals of grounded and magical.

Alicia!
